New York Newsday September 26th, 2000
Los Padres to Expand

The White House yesterday announced an expansion of The Los Padres National Forest,
extending protection of the ruggedly picturesque Big Sur region of the
central California coast.

The $4.55-million acquisition of a 784-acre parcel of former ranchland protects
a habitat for endangered trout and butterflies at the southern gateway to Big Sur,
where spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean ringed by towering cliffs draw
millions of tourists every year. The new land is tiny by comparison to the vast
acreage already under federal protection around Big Sur but carries large
symbolic value.

It represents one of President Bill Clinton's last opportunities to expand his
environmental legacy and an opportunity to confer further environmental and
conservation bona fides to Vice President Al Gore.

The highlights of the evening for me were the performances of CSN, the Eagles and Paul Simon. Each artist/group did three songs.

CSN did Marrakesh Express, Helplessly Hoping and Love the One You're With. The finale with all performers was Teach Your Children with Nash featured on lead. This CSN version of Helplessly Hoping was exquisite. It was better than during the CSNY show in DC and it was excellent then. I didn't think they could do much better but they topped themselves. Stills voice was superb and when it meshed with the wonderful voices of Nash and Crosby to produce the magic that is CSN. I am not one to toss around praise lightly so when it comes from me it is sincere. They also did a rousing rendition of Love the One Your With

When people think of the BIG festivals, the immediate ones that come to mind are
Monterey Pop, Woodstock, Altamont, Watkins Glenn, etc...
But on this day we commemorate a very special festival to us CSNY fans.

The 1969 Monterey Folk Festival.

It was held on September 13th and 14th, 1969, at

the Esalen Institute in Big Sur California.
It was captured on film and released to the public in a concert film called
"Celebration at Big Sur."

This festival also spawned the first "official" bootleg CSNY record, the infamous
"Wooden Nickel"

(Subsequently, years later, some fans in Italy decided to dedicate their
time to putting out a CSNY fanzine and they called it
"Wooden Nickel.")

This film, which used to run frequently on american television in the 70's, has
never been released officially for home video.

I wish the film would be officially released. It is a must have for every CSNY collector.

It is a classic period piece, from the ultimate CSNY footage of
"Sea of Madness" and "Down By the River",
as well as the Crosby, Stills, Nash, Joni Mitchell
and John Sebastian rendition of
Dino Valenti's aka Chet Powers

"Let's Get Together."

Movie still from the film "Celebration at Big Sur" ©

That particular performance is a cherished moment in time
that for me can always put a smile on my face, as the music makes
you feel as though you are part of the community.
These scenes define for me the epitomy of the CSNY sound.

Stephen Stills and John Sebastian
picking some acoustic blues with
"Bullfrog Blues." Seeing Joni debut her "new"
song
"Woodstock", about a festival that had happened in NY just a few short weeks
prior.

In the uncut version of the film, they depict the footage in the baths, with
David Crosby, John Sebastian, Carl Gottlieb, among others; communing with nature
and singing in the buff!

I love Dorothy Morrison and the Comb Sister's performances,
"All of God's Children Got Soul," and the group show closer
"Oh Happy Day." Their spirit transcends the moment and the viewer is uplifted.

Then their is the infamous heckler scene with Stephen, and the other guys
"lovin him out of the confrontation," to be segued into the Stills rap about
"pretty guitars and fancy guitars"...

Please read an account of the festival as it was reported in

ROLLING STONE - BIG SUR Article October 1969.

SMILE AT HALF MAST
by Warren Haynes ©

It's raining and my smiles at half mast
So many people - What do I say?
No more lying - no more dwelling on the past
No more faking after today

For so long there were no answers but now
We all know what to do
Pouring rain - wash away my pain
Let the love come shining through

So many things left unresolved
but it's not about that now

Face the people with my smile at half mast
But I can't face myself today
Waves of emotion with my smile at half mast
But there are no words to say

The smoke will rise - The fog will lift
And we'll see clearer than before
As I sit crying with my smile at half mast
A window opens as I close the door

Trying to find the whole truth
With my smile at half mast
But the truth doesn't matter anymore

My spirit's bleeding - my soul is crying
No more dying after today
Maybe I'll believe again some day
Face the ghost of beauty past - the ghost of music past
With my smile at half mast

FROM BILLBOARD 09/08/00

Page/Crowes Cancel All Remaining Tourdates

Jimmy Page's back injury has been
deemed serious enough to force the
cancellation of all remaining
Page/Black Crowes concerts in
North America, Europe, and Japan,
including four planned double bills
in October with the Who at New
York's Madison Square Garden. In a
statement released late Friday (Sept.
8), Page -- who has been ordered to
rest for six weeks and may eventually require surgery -- expressed
"great disappointment and distress" over the news.

The tour cancellation comes just two days after the supergroup
confirmed the itinerary for the Europe and Japanese dates, which were
set to kick off Nov. 12 in London and wrap Dec. 13 in Tokyo. When
Page first injured his back in August, seven shows on the second leg
of a North American tour were scrapped, but three shows were later
rescheduled and were set to resume Sept. 15 in Mountainview, Calif.

According to a spokesperson for the Who, the band still plans to
perform at all four of the MSG shows on Oct. 3, 4, 6, and 7. If Page
recovers in time, he and the Crowes will attempt to reschedule the New
York and Japanese concerts sometime in December. Tickets for the
canceled shows will be refunded at their point of purchase.

Bethel to Get Woodstock Venue

Photo by Ramiro © 1999 Melanie at "A Day in the Garden" last summer

The music will live on at the 1969 Woodstock concert site in the form
of a $40 million dollar performing arts and music center to be completed
by 2003, New York Gov George Pataki and developer Alan Gerry
announced August 29th, 2000 at the site.

The 4000 seat indoor theatre in Bethel, about 80 miles north of NYC,
will open to accomodate another 15,000 spectators on the back lawn,
where patrons can see dance, theatre, and music performances.
It will be the first permanent structure erected on Max Yasgur's old hillside
farm since those memorable three days in August '69.

Gerry, who turned his TV antenna business into one of the
nation's largest cable television operations, bought the 37-acre concert
site for about $1 million dollars in 1997. He later purchased 1,300
surrounding acres for an undisclosed price. He also created
the non-profit Gerry Foundation to develop the site and help the area's
ailing economy.

The foundation will contribute $16 million and raise $9 million
through endorsements and private contributions while the state will
add $15 million dollars.

A Michael "Kelly" Finnigan sighting!!!

by suitelorraine.com compadre and correspondant

Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band
@ the Trump Marina Casino "The Shell" August 30th, 2000

"I had the opportunity to catch Taj Mahal at Trump Marina Casino
on 8/30/00 while staying in Atlantic City overnight.
The primary reason I went to the show was that Taj was playing with a
backing band called The Phantom Blues Band which included none other
then long time CSN keyboardist extraordinaire
Michael Finnigan.

I was pleasantly surprised by the show.
Taj played a nice set of blues, rhythm & blues and reggae
flavored songs. A small, intimate audience responded enthusiastically to the music.

Taj opened the show by commenting that it looked like all
"Mike Finnigan's relatives were in the
audience" (something about Atlantic City being Irish...
anyway, the audience got a kick out of it).

Finns played electric piano & organ. He got great crowd response
to several solos. The only regret was that he did not sing solo.

Stephen Stills would have been jealous of the yellow
Hawaiian shirt with tropical fish that Taj wore.
It was a beauty! Overall it was an excellent show."

BOBBY BROOKS

Bobby Brooks was CSN's friend & agent. He passed away in 1990, on the helicopter crash
that also took the life of STEVIE RAY VAUGHN.

I saw CSN that summer the same day as Brooks funeral in New Jersey.
They played a show at the Garden State Arts Center and Graham dedicated the show to Brooks,
as well as a brand new song that he wrote for Bobby Brooks.

The ad reads as follows:

Bobby Brooks
October 28th, 1955 - August 28th, 1990
______

Ten years ago, we tragically lost an amazing agent, a great friend
and most importantly, a special human being.

His unbridled spirit and passion for the people, the business and the music
were unique in our industry. His ability to make friends with the biggest rock stars
and industry leaders was rivaled only by his joy of befriending
every secretary, assistant, and roadie.

He enjoyed every show, he listened to every CD, he returned every phone
call. He could disarm difficult situations with his caustic sense of humor,
and embrace the best of times with a childlike wonder.

Most importantly, he was always amazed at that he could get paid to do what he
loved so much.

Help us honor his memory. Enjoy the music.....

Reveling in the vibe of LA's Laurel Canyon community,
Young's first solo US top 40 hit was rumored to be about

friendship, nostalgic love and chronic hermit-hood
certainly seemed to fit. But at a CNY show in 1977, Young admitted
he'd really written it for Graham Nash. Thus reprieved
