"Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red
and purple sunset"
excerpt from An Indian Prayer - Unknown

Spent the weekend with the BRIDGE SCHOOL WEBCAST!!!
I must say, it was the best webcast transmission I have experienced
to date.
Saturday Night 10/28/00
I joined the webcast during
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
They were in good spirits, and did an excellent set.
Next up Dave Mathews Band and NEIL YOUNG
joined him on a beautiful reading of Neil's
Cortez the Killer
After Mathews set, Neil's "Family and Friends" graced the stage.
They rolled through the following songs:
Are You Ready For the Country
..This was glorious
Old Man
I was expecting CSN to kick in on this one as guests...
Daddy Went A Walkin'
Heart of Gold
Razor Love
Red Sun
Tonight's the Night
After that set during the webcast there was a brief interview
with Astrid Young. Then there was an even shorter Graham Nash
and Astrid Q&A.
Next up was
CSNY
Helpessly Hoping
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Dream For Him
Slowpoke
After the Gold Rush
Teach Your Children
Love the One Your With
They guys sounded GREAT! And the transmission for me
was only interupted shortly during OLCBYH.
It was great to hear OLCBYH again. During the 2000 tour
they stopped playing it in the set early on in the tour.
(I was glad I caught it in Detroit).
Sunday Night 10/29/00
This is what I caught of the webcast tonight.
Another beautiful "Cortez" by Mathews and Young
A very brief Q&A by a Bridge School student with
David and Graham.
then
Neil Young Family and Friends
Words
*Stunning*
Old Man
(Lorraine and Ramiro hit the road towards home from the shop)
Back home in time for the CSNY set in progress.
I stepped in at the end of
DREAM FOR HIM
Thank GOD just in time for the TREAT....
Neil introduced Crosby, Stills and Nash
and they kicked into
SUITE: Judy Blue Eyes
Can you say Beauty!?!
Of course during this peak moment there was net congestion
But I heard most of the song. Big surprise that they did this
tonight
They were in good shape.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN
LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH
- end -
Pegi and Neil G'nite
See you next year!!
What a great way to start a new week.

In the new Rolling Stone Issue No.853
Al Gore Cover
A feature in this issue is JOHN LENNON Remembered.
Fellow musicians recalling where they were when they heard JOHN
was shot.
Among the artists included are DAVID CROSBY and GRAHAM NASH:
DAVID CROSBY
"I don't remember where I was at the time. I just remember being
very depressed,
because I loved him very deeply. We were friends. I found him
to be smart,
acerbic, shrewd, witty, and a good guy. He and the other Beatles
were
all very kind to us when we came over to England as the Byrds.
They kind
of took us under their wing, and from that point forward, we saw
each other alot.
Whenever they came to the United States, I would go to the gigs
and hang out with them.
For me, John Lennon's legacy is his songs - all those
brilliant, beautiful, incredible pieces of work. John was a very
fierce guy
- he wasn't a shy little human being. He was a guy with strong
opinions,
and he had no problem expressing them.
GRAHAM NASH
I was lying on my bed watching Monday Night Football - it was
Miami and the New England Patriots - when I heard the news. Howard
Cosell
broke the news. Apart from being very, very, upset by the loss
of someone
whom I had met many times, the first thing that occurred to me
was wondering
how many songs we were never going to hear, that were working
around in his head.
I'd been acquainted with John since about 1958 before the Beatles.
The first
time I actually met him was at the Cavern in Liverpool in, like,
1962, when the
Hollies were playing on the same bill as the Beatles. John was
always on
the front edge - it's very much the same as what Neil (Young)
does.
All those incredible people are always on the front edge. And
sometimes they
fall, and sometimes they fly. John's legacy is that he gave as
much
dignity to the common man as he could. He stood for dignity and
respect
and songs that had a reason for being.

"There's an extremely long interview with Cameron Crowe
in today's UK Newspaper THE GUARDIAN - Friday October 20th, 2000
in which he talks about his movie "Almost Famous" and his years
as a
Rolling Stone journalist."
Here is the final quote from the piece:
"The main effect of my Rolling Stone career was that I felt like
I had a
place in the world. I could write about this thing that I loved
so much;
and as rough as it was, and caught in the middle as I was, I guess
it was
my persona back then.
I ran into STEPHEN STILLS at a football game a year
and a half ago, and he introduced me to his wife. Here's how he
introduced me.
"This is Cameron. He was a fan who always got caught in the middle
between wanting to be friends with us, and wanting to please Rolling
Stone, who didn't like us as much as he did."
I thought: wow, what happened to the power and mystery of journalism
and writing?
That was the role I played:
the fan who had several masters to serve - one of which was...
me "

The first 5 minutes of the 11th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards
September 21st, 2000 in Toronto were the highlight of the whole
evening, when Lenny Kravitz joined Canadian rockers The Guess
Who for a rendition of their classic hit, "American Woman." Toward
the end of the song, Kravitz and Burton Cummings improvised vocal
trades.

Roger McGuinn is participating in an untitled IMAX film, with
a who's who of country
music. The film will showcase the genre and its subcategories,
and is scheduled for release next June.
The spotlight will shine on bluegrass, mountain, gospel, honky-tonk,
rockabilly, Western swing, and contemporary country. Segements
are being filmed in Ireland, Detroit, North Carolina, Texas, New
York, Utah, Nashville, and at Gene Autry's Melody Ranch in Southern
California.
You heard it here first, when I posed the question recently about
the fact whether or not SFX was holding back the box office figures
from NEIL YOUNG's tour.
I determined this from the fact that only stats from 2 of his
dates surfaced in POLLSTAR Magazine. The whole reason POLLSTAR
has been in business for the past 20 years is mainly to report
concert grosses, besides reporting other music industry news.
Read below for more on this....
Lorraine
* * * * * * *
SFX Issues Nondisclosure Policy
The SFX Music division announced a new non-disclosure policy September
25th, 2000 stating the entertainment behemoth would no longer
be reporting concert grosses to trades. The company, which controls
more than half of the concert business, stated it would instead
issue cumulative gross and ticket sale numbers on a quarterly
basis.
The move was met with what SFX representatives said was a surprising
wave of criticism from various sectors of the industry including
agents, managers, venue officials, and the remaining independent
promoters. Several SFX promoters also stated privately that they
did not support the new company-wide policy but had no choice
but to go along. At this point, it is unclear exactly where the
decision emanated from or what motivated it.
Two days after announcing its new non-reporting policy, company
spokesperson Howard Schacter acknowledged that SFX, which is a
wholly owned subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, was in
the process of rethinking the idea.
Attempts to reach SFX president Brian Becker and music division
heads Jack Boyle or Irv Zuckerman for comment were unsuccessful
at press time.
# # # #
POLLSTAR's Editorial Comment:
For nearly 20 years, POLLSTAR has aggressively championed the
reporting of concert grosses. We have long held that it is to
absolutely everyone's benefit - promoters, agents, managers or
even the artists themselves - to have a realistic view of what
is a highly volatile marketplace. To choke off the flow of this
information could only have a negative effect on the health of
the entire industry. POLLSTAR will continue to provide an unbiased
analysis of the concert industry and we will seek out box office
information from other sources but clearly, our job will be much
more difficult and the data will not be as complete without the
voluntary help of SFX.
The record business was a hugely inefficient machine that operated
on a smoke and mirrors basis prior to the advent of SoundScan.
Despite the fact that you can no longer engineer an artificial
"hit" record, we doubt that anyone in the music business would
advocate a return to the pre-SoundScan days when hype was more
important than the reality of what the public was actually buying.
What makes this policy shift even more disturbing is that SFX
is part of Clear Channel, which as a publicly traded company,
has a far greater responsibility to disclose financial details
to current or potential investors than any of the previously privately
owned promoters that make up the regional SFX entities. With Clear
Channel stock currently in the doldrums, one must ask why was
this decision to choke off the information flow made now? Certainly,
the disclosure of cumulative quarterly numbers would be a completely
meaningless exercise for both the concert industry and the Wall
Street analysts who track Clear Channel stock.
We applaud SFX for quickly recognizing the chorus of opposing
opinions concerning its policy shift and agreeing to reevaluate
its stance. The company has a chance to act like a real industry
leader. Let's hope it does so.

PAROLE DENIED!!!!
The following is the complete text of Yoko Ono's letter to the
New York State Division of Parole.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Parole Board:
This is my reply to the petition of parole made by Mark David
Chapman from here on called "the subject.'' It is not easy for
me
to write this letter to you since it is still painful for me to
think
of what happened that night and verbalize my thoughts logically.
Forgive me if I fall short of your expectation of giving you a
satisfactory opinion. But these are my sincere thoughts.
My husband John Lennon was a very special man. A man of
humble origin, he brought light and hope to the whole world with
his words and music. He tried to be a good power for the world,
and he was. He gave encouragement, inspiration and dreams to
people regardless of their race, creed and gender. For me, he
was
the other half of the sky. We were in love with each other like
the most vehement of lovers to the last moment. For our son Sean
he was the world. That world shattered when the "subject'' pulled
the trigger. For Julian, it was losing his father twice. For the
people of the world, it was as though the light went out for a
moment and darkness prevailed. With his one act of violence in
those few seconds, the "subject'' managed to change my whole
life, devastate his sons, and bring deep sorrow and fear to the
world. It was, indeed, the power of destruction at work.
At first, I had refused to acknowledge John's death. I announced
that, "There is no funeral for John.'' In my mind, I was saying
"BECAUSE HE IS NOT DEAD!'' "Tell me he is not dead, tell me he
is not dead.'' I was screaming inside myself. But then, I started
to
hear that young girls were jumping off buildings to kill
themselves. I realized then that it was not a time for me to
simply wallow in my own pain. I organized a world vigil with the
prayer that, together, we would somehow get through.
For the past twenty years, I've carried the torch John and I once
carried together to try to let the darkness go. I asked the fans
to
remember John's birthday, not the day of his passing. When
people asked how I felt about the killer of my husband, I have
always told them that I didn't think about that day anymore. I
wanted to look to the future, and not to remember that horrible
moment. But in actual fact, the memory of that night has never
left me for the last twenty years.
It was so cruel. So unjust. My husband did not deserve this. He
was in no way ready to die. He was feeling good with the prospect
of doing a concert tour after making the album which became his
last. He would have gladly changed his position with the
"subject,'' and live the life of protection that the "subject''
enjoys now. Even in confinement, my husband John would have
cherished hearing voices of people he loved, enjoyed creating
songs, and simply appreciated watching the sky and its changes
through the seasons. John cannot do any of that now.
His family and the world rested because justice was finally done
by the court. The ''subject'' was imprisoned. If he were to be
released now, many will feel betrayed. Anger and fear would rise
again.
It would also give a "go'' signal to the others who would like
to
follow in the footsteps of the "subject'' to receive world
attention. I am afraid it will bring back the nightmare, the chaos
and confusion once again. Myself and John's two sons, would not
feel safe for the rest of our lives. People who are in positions
of
high visibility and outspokenness such as John, would also feel
unsafe.
Finally, it will not be safe for the "subject'' himself. He will
cease to have the security that the State provides him now. I
understand that he has been isolated from other prisoners
because of the threat of possible harm to him. Well, there are
more people in the outside world who are strongly distressed
about what he has done. They would feel that it is unfair that
the
"subject'' is rewarded with a normal life while John lost his.
Violence begets violence. If it is at all possible, I would like
us to
not create a situation which may bring further madness and
tragedy to the world.
I thank you in advance for your wise and just decision. I am,
Sincerely yours,
Yoko Ono Lennon

CALVIN "FUZZY" SAMUELS

Born in Caribbean, on the island of Antigua, Calvin grew up in London, England.
He taught himself to play piano, ukelele and acoustic guitar,
later switching to bass.
He began traveling in England and Europe with various soul and
R&B bands. He
started writing and recording with Eddy "Electric Avenue" Grant, then of the English group, The Equals;while also playing with
guitarist Junior Marvin of
Bob Marley & The Wailers, where he got the nickname 'Fuzz' by playing his bass through a fuzz box.
He formed the first all-black power trio in England, The
Sundae Times, scoring a top ten hit in Israel with a song called "Abba Abba",
written and produced by Eddy Grant for the album, "Us Colored Kids."
The band included singer/guitarist, Dell Richardson and drummer Conrad Isadore.
This led to the making of Stephen Stills' first two solo albums
STEPHEN STILLS and STEPHEN STILLS 2
which included superstars Jimi Hendrix, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, The
Memphis Horns, Mama Cass, and Rita Coolidge,
During this time he worked and lived with P.P. Arnold for six years,
performing under the name Axis. While working with
Stills a big break came, getting him a position with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
With CSNY he toured the United States, recored their legendary live
album, Four Way Street, and also performed on their classic single, "Ohio."
Working sessions between London and Los Angeles, he became part
of
Stephen Stills band, "Manassas," with
Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, Paul Harris and Al Perkins,
cutting
the epic 1st double album entitled "Manassas," and the follow up lp, "Down the Road."
"Manassas" toured for three years, in the US and abroad, to rave reviews
for their
diverse mix of music, they covered the gamut
from blues, to bluegrass, folk, rock and a sprinkling of country.
They were hugely innovative at the time.
In the later 70's he also performed with the group America and appeared with Neil Young
in his concert movie "Rust Never Sleeps."
In the 80's he wrote and recorded songs with Marianne Faithful along with Steve Winwood.
Later he joined the Alvin Lee Band along with Mick Taylor touring for over six
years. For Taj Mahal, he worked on the Broadway musical, "Mule Bone" written by Langston Hughes and Zora Lee Hurston, with music composed by Taj starring blues man Kenny Neal.
In the early 90s he teamed up with Bobby Keys, Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins and Ivan
Neville as "Tumbling Dice".
Now he is performing solo on the Bouzouki a World Beat blend of
Blues, Reggae, Calypso, Classic Rock and African folk songs.
FUZZY has a new album recorded at his home studio.

Los Padres to Expand
The White House yesterday announced an expansion of The Los Padres National Forest,
extending protection of the ruggedly picturesque Big Sur region

The $4.55-million acquisition of a 784-acre parcel of former ranchland
protects
a habitat for endangered trout and butterflies at the southern

where spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean ringed by towering
cliffs draw
millions of tourists every year. The new land is tiny by comparison
to the vast

large
symbolic value.
It represents one of President Bill Clinton's last opportunities

CSN did Marrakesh Express, Helplessly Hoping and Love the One You're With. The finale with all performers was Teach Your Children with Nash featured on lead. This CSN version of Helplessly Hoping was exquisite. It was better than
during the CSNY show in DC and it was excellent then. I didn't
think they could do much better but they topped themselves. Stills voice was superb and when it meshed with the wonderful voices
of Nash and Crosby to produce the magic that is CSN. I am not one to toss around praise lightly so when it comes
from me it is sincere. They also did a rousing rendition of Love the One Your With which got the crowd's adrenaline going. At the end it was nice
to see the three Eagles, Bette, Paul S. Darlene Love and others
singing Teach.
Stills shared a moment with the audience. He recalled that 36 years
ago around the time he wrote Helplessly Hoping he was in the nosebleed seats in Radio City Music Hall supporting
the election of another "good" democrat (name not mentioned).
I guess he was pointing out that the struggle continues.
The next highlight was Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Timothy B. Schmidt (three of the Eagles). Henley's rendition of Desperado was stunning. His voice had that characteristically husky quality
that lent it self very well to the emotional content of the song.
Frey's and Schmidt's harmony sowed it all together. They received a standing ovation
for their effort.
Paul Simon was the final act. I had never seen him live and was surprised
at the ease of his performance. His voice was the same to me as
the first time I heard his records many years ago. His "World
Music" version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters was a great rendition of the song. One of my favs.
