CROSBY STILLS NASH

!
Updated 12/01/01
THIS WEEK:
"Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look
Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones
an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing."

DECEMBER NEWS

*FOR GEORGE*

Stephen Stills, explains the impetus behind the 2002 tour this
way:
"Neil called and said 'Come on, let's go. Let's go now.'
You see we originally thought we were gonna go out in August.
When
Neil called I said, 'Yeah we're ready to go out and play. When
do you
want to do that?' He said 'Now.' I said, 'Now?' He said, 'Yeah,
the
time's right. The people need this. Let's go.'"

Man Of Constant Sorrow
I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my days
I'll say goodbye to Colorado
Where I was born and partly raised.
Your mother says I'm a stranger
My face you'll never see no more
But there's one promise, darling:
I'll see you on God's golden shore.
Through this open world I'm about to ramble
Through ice and snows, sleet and rain
I'm about to ride that morning railroad
Perhaps I'll die on that train.
I'm going back to Colorado
The place that I started from
If I had known how bad you'd treat me honey
I never would have come.

It was also reported that Stephen did a rehearsal / sound check
on keyboards for one tune, but did not play it at the shows.
I missing stuff like this.
I have 4 words for this
Who has the tape?
My consolation is that I was seeing Jefferson Starship on Saturday
night
who were in full musical psychedelic regalia.
What a show! Slick Aguilar, who at one time played with Croz in
the early 80's
was absolutely on fire. Mssrs Kanter and Balin where pretty good
themselves!!!
;-D
As well as the rest of the gang.
It was a hell of a setlist - 2nd set for the night

The "Furthur" bus carries the rainbow colored casket of Ken Kesey
following a memorial service in Eugene Ore. November 14th. More
than 1,000
people attended services for the 66-year-old hippie impresario
best-selling
author filmmaker actor farmer and teacher. The author of "One
Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest" and "Sometimes a Great Notion" died November 10th

MOJO Collections Issue
(For vinyl junkies, rarity freaks, and cult connoisseurs)
Autumn 2001 is here.
It's a seasonal realease, other than the monthly issue's.
Inside is Crosby content!
a 5 page Article titled:
The Crosby Show
It's been a long strange trip for David Crosby with plenty of
success (The Byrds, CSN)
and excess (drugs, liver transplant) along the way. He tells Mark
Paytress about the famous
friends who kept him company through it all.
He discusses his musical friends including:
Fred Neil
Paul Kantner
Bob Dylan
Roger McGuinn
Hugh Masekela
Jerry Garcia
Joni Mitchell
et al....
Excerpt:
PAUL KANTNER:
Sci-fi loving Jefferson Airplane man
"Kantner is a truly unusual human being. He's an extremely bright
man, very opinionated and great fun. He and I spent a great deal
of time
together, and to this day he's one of my favorite people because
he's
never compromised. He doesn't give a shit about making money.
He loves to
make music and he loves to stir up trouble.
We share a love of science fiction, which is why we did things
like
'Have You Seen the Stars Tonight? and 'Wooden Ships.' We wrote
that right after I got tossed out of the Byrds. It's still one
of my
favorite pieces of writing. We both felt it was mankinds destiny
to grow up, stop beating each other over the head with sticks
and go
out in the stars and find our destiny. We're both iconoclasts,
both very
anti-establishment."

First up this week some POLLSTAR NEWS
from the 11/16/01 Issue
*Gimmee Mick!*
"While The Rolling Stones might venture out for global dates to
celebrate their 40th anniversary, Mick Jagger might do some unplugged
showcases of his new solo album through Asia, Australia and New
Zealand. Jagger is also tipped to holiday in Sydney through the
Christmas break to coincide with the cricket season."

"Produced in conjunction with The Guacamole Fund, the fourth
annual Valley Music Festival in Solvang, Calif., raised more than
$50,000 for local art and music classes. At the October 1-2 concerts
at the Solvang Festival Theater are (L-R) co-producer Jan Crosby
with
her performing hubby, David Crosby, and Clint Black."

Movin' on up!
CSN have moved up on the Top 50 USA Tours chart
As of 11/16/01 they are @ #27
Last week they were @ 31
(This is based on the stats of 17 shows.)

News items of note
"Gibson Guitar Corp. has signed a letter of intent to purchase
the
financially ailing Baldwin Piano & Organ Co. Terms of the deal were
not disclosed. Gibson will purchase the assets from GE Capital,
Baldwin's largest creditor which secured the right to sell the
company under a recent bankruptcy court agreement. Burdened by
excessive inventory, severance agreements and executive compensation
commitments, Baldwin owed GE Capital nearly $31 million before
filing
Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. GE Capital bid $17 million for most
of
Baldwin's assets last month, agreeing to sell them by November
15th."
"John Roberts, 56, one of the main investors in the original Woodstock
festival, died in Manhattan November 2nd of cancer. Roberts and
his
friend Joel Rosenman fell into producing the historic festival
almost
by accident. In 1967, the men wanted to write a sitcom about two
young venture capitalists with money but no business plans, so
they
placed an ad in The New York Times seeking "interesting and
legitimate business enterprises" for ideas. After financing
Mediasound Recording Studios in New York, the two formed Woodstock
Ventures with Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld. Borrowing a reported
$1.8 million from his trust fund, Roberts didn't clear the concert's
debts until 1980. He also co-produced the 25th anniversary concert
in
1994."

I ordered the Jennifer Stills EP, and have been awaiting it's

As I write this I have Neil Youngs "On the Beach" spinning with

So you know that vinyl lives round these part, (as I imagine it
does for alot of visitors of this site.)
With this in mind, it's important to note that Classic Records,
based in Los Angeles
has been reissuing a number of "classic"
csn and related records on 180gm audiophile discs.

"They sound great. I was there with Bernie Grundman for the mastering

Grundman gave all of these discs his ultra touch.
They are all meticulously re-mastered for vinyl."-Gerry Tolman
Thanks for the good word on the vinyl Gerry - time to go shopping!

Crosby in print
There are a number of recent Crosby reviews and interviews in
the press.
September 2001 Issue of Mojo #94
Reviews the CPR show @ the London Jazz Cafe - by Sid Griffin
"Final night of the European tour sees the godfather of hippy
play a tight two and half hour set of hits and new material."
Excerpt:
"Crosby's music is unique. Guitars tuned to open chords, relatively
complex time changes, and off-beat vocal
harmonies driving along philosophical, introspective lyrics add
up to an artist either loved or dismissed. Almost every song
tonight could be described as mysterious or melancholic and when
Crosby's crystal clear, bell-like tenor sends the melody sky
high they work very well. Tracks from his immortal first solo
album If I Could Only Remember My Name gets
particularly audible approval, which is deserved since both Music is Love and the lyricless yet beautifully sung
Song With No Words sound staggering in their pristine vocal packaging. New material
such as Morrison, the sad tale
of The Doors late singer, and the surprisingly rockin' Katie Did are also delivered with more verve than on record."

Found in the September issue of the UK Magazine Record Collector
is a 2 page interview with Mr David Crosby.
Short Takes...Crosby gets CPR by Peter Doggett
Some points of note:
He is blunt about CPR's future: "This band is a labor of love,
but it's a Britney Spears world, man, and we're failing.
We can't sell any records and we lose money when we tour. If Neil
calls and says let's do
another tour, then CPR will survive, because I'll keep subsiding
it. If he doesn't , it'll die."
"CSNY's tour last year won ecstatic reviews - but not in Europe,
where the millionaire quartet refused to venture".
'It's money,' Crosby claims. 'It costs too much to come over here.
That's why Neil came with Crazy Horse instead of us.
Believe me, we were pissed; we wanted to come. I was very offended
that he came with Crazy Horse instead of us.
But his manager, Elliot Roberts - who is also my manager - is
very concerned with optimising the amount
of money he can make. And that means playing the US not here.'
RE: Looking Forward: 'I was disappointed. We didn't use all the best songs. Nash had
at least
two others that were better than the ones on the record. I had
Climber which we made a really good track of.
And Neil had much better ones than 'Queen of Them All,' which should never have been on the record. It was a jerk-off.'
When asked about another CSNY reunion: 'I talked to Neil the night before last, and he says he's still
keen'
David Crosby on STEPHEN STILLS: 'At what he does, no one can touch Stills.'
David Crosby on GRAHAM NASH: 'Nash is the best harmony singer on the planet -hands down nobody
can touch him.'
David Crosby on NEIL YOUNG: 'Playing with Neil is very intense, and very exciting.
He leans forward into what's possible, all the time. He's powerful.
He's got a lot of juice.'
David Crosby on THE RECORD BUSINESS: 'A whiskey company owned one quarter of the record business.
And they sold it to a French water company. What do you think
the French water company executives know about songs?
I'll tell you. F*&%ing nothing. They wouldn't know a song if flew
up their f*&%$ing nose and died.'
Tell us how you REALLY feel David!!!

The November 8th, 2001 Issue of Rolling Stone - RS#881
This is their 2nd annual car issue
Guess who we find inside the pages??
The ever present: Mr David Crosby
Where artists are discusing their first cars:
Crosby: "It was a 1950 Ford two - door, column shift, twin pipes.
It was gray-green, I think.
My parents gave it to me; I was sixteen. It gave me mobility and
allowed me to get laid. I put glass packs on it.
Good noise - "Rrrowrrr!" The main thing you wanted to do with
it was drive around, look cool, make a great noise,
and hopefully, convince girls to go riding with you so you could
take them on back roads and try to kiss them.
My wife's laughing, asking, 'Did it work?' Yes!"

Also found inside Rolling Stone RS#881
Is an article on JIM IRSAY (the owner of the Indianapolis Colts)
by Martin Schoeller entitled:
The Many Passions of Jim Irsay
The pertinence of this is that there is STILLS content here.
"Rock and roll is a driving force in Irsay's life.
This is a man who dates even personal history in reference to
musical tragedies."
The author wanted to interview Irsay about his recent purchase
of the original
On The Road manuscript by Jack Kerouac.
Irsay's publicist got back to Schoellar and told him,
"Jim wants to play you some new songs that he's been working on.
He has one of Stephen Stills old guitars and he is bringing it
to the office."
EXCERPT:
"As a kid, Jim was schooled in music by an old black man from
Chicago's South Side, whom he calls 'a house man,' and who took
Jim on drives and told him about Muddy Waters and the blues. Jim
later added John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan to his personal
pantheon and has since built himself a shadow life, wherein he
hangs out with pop heroes lile Cameron Crowe and Hunter S. Thompson
and jams
with rock stars like Mike Mills of R.E.M. and Stephen Stills.
Irsay sometimes plays his own tunes at charity concerts or ducks
into a
studio to put down some tracks. A few years ago, he wrote and
recorded a song, along with Mills and Stills, for Ryan White;
the boy who came to symbolize the tragedy of AIDS..."
