A NEIL YOUNG interview aired this week on Canadian Music Television
channel Much More Music.
Much More Music is equivalent to the US's VH1 cable channel.
Here is an excerpt of the conversation from the site:
Here are portions of Jana Lynne White's conversation with Neil
Young on Speakeasy:
Jana: "Silver and Gold", another one, which started on the H.O.R.D.E.
tour, right? You cooked up an idea, you wanted to do a solo tour
but it kept morphing. The idea kept changing. How come?
Neil: On, uh, the H.O.R.D.E. tour was the Crazy Hourse tour and it
was pretty well all electric guitars and that kind of music. So
by the end of the tour, which was many dates, you know, I was
starting to think about other things, and I started writing songs
in the bus and -- but my voice was real low from singing with
Crazy Horse, you know, cuz I sing a lot louder and it wears, it
opens up the bottom of my voice and I lost the top, so the songs
that I wrote were in this lower register. So as soon as I got
home from the H.O.R.D.E. tour I had to record those songs.
Jana: Yeah. And it was pointed out to me today that you've actually
played on this tour more dates then you ever played in your previous
incarnations with the band.
Neil: Yeah, we've done more shows than we ever did before, total.
Jana: Getting back to "Silver And Gold", you didn't produce it alone.
You had help.
Neil: Yeah, Ben Keith and he was a lotta help to me on this record.
He's been my good friend for years and years. I met him on the
"Harvest" sessions for "Old Man" and "Heart Of Gold" and I've
been playing with him on and off and making records with him on
and off over the years. He's played on more of my records probably
than most people, if not all of them, and then he used to just
help me musically and David Briggs was producing and then when
David died a few years ago, Ben was there for me too, to help,
just to keep some objectivity and some other opinions happening.
He understands where I'm coming from with the music because we've
been doing it for 30 years.
Jana: You've had some practice.
Neil: We've had some practice and he understands.
Jana: Are you as creative now as you ever have been?
Neil: It's a different kind of creation. I feel the presence of it
but the physical manifestation of things, I feel more like there
was a year in 1974 or 1975 where I made three albums in one year,
but I feel like I'm maybe not putting as much quantity out but
that the quality is raising and recently but I don't think that's
gonna be a trend. I mean, I think what's probably gonna happen
is I'm gonna go back to bein' the other way and just bangin' it
for a while because working on something so precisely for so long
and being anything for too long is no good.

Yesterday I forgot to mention that a full page ad ran in The Voice
for the 2 area Neil Shows @ PNC Arts Center and Jones Beach.
Yesterday the latest issue of Alan Jenkin's fanzine Broken Arrow (BA#79) arrived on my doorstep.
I have been a NYAS member since 1983.
This issue covers alot of the CSNY 2000 tour. Also enclosed is
a special editorial by Alan, where he reveals that he is seeking
a replacement for someone else to take over the day to day running
of the fanzine. Alan feels his age is catching up with him and
the stress of the production of the fanzine is taking it's toll.
I want to state here that Alan has done and continues to do a
great job with the NYAS. Back in the old days (BI - before internet);
Broken Arrow was one of the only ways other like minded Neil Young
fans could share info, get to know one another and trade music.
We who use the internet today for our musical interests have the
great luxury of info at our fingertips 24 hours a day. It was
hard to be a hardcore fan before, because we all were so detached
from one another; now the internet unites us all.
If no one steps forward to take over the fanzine, Alan does promise
to continue the fanzine though the issues may take a little longer
to come out.
Here is the Broken Arrow website.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages.nyas
The site is currently down. It will change URL's soon and is in
the process of getting a face lift.
I'd like to thank Dave Champagne for his story contribution.
I call it Dave, Golf and Nash
Check it out for his great story of how he met Graham Nash.
Read it via the link above. It also resides in the CSN Fan Corner.
Thanks Dave!

David Crosby and Graham Nash will be featured among a star studded cast of other California

The Santa Monica Civic Center; August 8th and 9th, 2000.
This will be a truly monumental show, with immense talent on one
stage.
The other acts will include:
Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne,
David Lindley,
Warren Zevon, Chris Hillman, Colin Hay and The Grease Monkeys
with Jennifer Condos, Ry Cooder, Andy Fairweather Low, Ethan Johns,
Bernie Leadon and Wix.
These shows are being coordinated by The Guacamole Fund, in support of :
The Friends of FRED WALECKI.
FRED WALECKI has been a beloved Los Angeles fixture to musicians
for over 30 years as the proprietor @ Westwood Music. Fred has had serious surgery causing disability, due to throat
cancer, and has incurred medical expenses not covered by insurance.
There are Golden and Silver Circle tickets being sold. Please
call the Guacamole Fund for more information: 800-728-6223
Here is some background info on Westwood Music and FRED WALECKI
found on his website @ http://westwoodmusic.com
Westwood Music is known throughout the country as the leader in
understanding and anticipating a musicians needs and for developing
the technology to meet those needs. We create solutions to problems
that even musicians at times are unable to articulate. Since our
beginning 50 years ago, we have always been known for treating
each customer, from beginner to pro, with legendary warmth and
service. Since the 60s, Westwood Music and its owner, Fred Walecki,
have been at the center of rock and roll legend-making. The stories
abound--like the time the Stones went to see Sonny and Brownie
at the Ash Grove, driven by Fred in his moms station wagon. Or
when Bernie Leadon promised to stand good for a Westwood Music
charge account for his new band, which had come up with the questionable
name of "The Eagles". Those were wild and heady days.
Founded first as a rare violin, harp, and orchestral instrument
store by Hermann Walecki in 1947, Westwood Music gained international
stature as Hermann sold some of the most important rare instruments
of this century: the "Lord Nelson Stradivarius", the "Markivich
Stradivarius", and the "Mendolson Stradivarius", to mention only
a few. When Hermann fell ill in 1966, his son Fred, at the age
of nineteen, took over the business.
Realizing his sensibilities lay more with guitars and other modern
instruments, Fred gradually phased out the rare instrument side
of the business and began to cater to clients involved in the
new sounds of the 60s. Within a few short years Fred had been
befriended by such music legends as The Buffalo Springfield, Bernie
Leadon, Ned Doheny, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Poco, Linda
Rondstadt, and The Byrds And the rest, as they say, is Rock and
Roll history, as evidenced by the abundance of Gold Records lining
the walls of the store from groups both past and present.
Through the 70s, 80s, and 90s the client list has grown and
grown for one simple reasonno other music store in Southern California
is really involved with what large stage groups need, i.e., custom
length, high quality cords; kel lights, batteries, gaffers tape,
custom anvil cases measured for the clients at their rehearsal
halls, and personal, 24 hour commitment to service. Late night
phone calls at home to Fred from a group in a bind are common.
Twelve hours to a guy on the road who is unable to get a three-dollar
item that will make or break the pedal steel player seems like
an eternity. With Westwood Music behind them, that item is there
next day by FedEx, delivered to the guys room by the bell hop
with the morning coffee.
These days its hard to imagine what our store is like if you
havent been in, but its a relief from the supermarket-type stores.
The small profit margins of the chain stores seem to dictate impersonal
treatment, but it doesnt have to be that way. We meet their prices
but not their lack of service. Buying a guitar used to be a great
time and it still can bepicking up and playing twenty or so Martins
before choosing the perfect one, or having the same people who
set up Bruce Cockburns guitar set up yours. Thats very cool.
It helps that we have such a long and rich history with the old
companies like Martin and Gibson. Things are a bunch easier when
you actually know the humans you are speaking to at these big
companies. How do we know them? First, we like the people at the
big companies, and they like us. Heck, some of the high lamas
at the big companies worked with us in our store years ago, like
Ren Fergison back in the 60s, or Chris Martin in the 70s. Ren
is one of the high guys at Gibson acoustic in Bozeman, and Chris
is the main person at Martin now.
Beginning student, talented songwriter/bar player, and the fortunate
few who have became musical legendsWestwood Music has been loyal
to them all. We arent big but we are powerful when you need real
help from real people who sell the good goods. It is not unusual
on any given day to find Joni Mitchell or Lyle Lovett, Graham
Nash or David Crosby, Kevin ("Kebmo") or Chris Hillman, visiting
Westwood Music, talking with the other regular customers.
The CSNY Store Online is having a 20% off sale thru 06/25.

This came across my desk today:
An international television series sponsored by Radio Shack and
RCA plans to take top recording artists to some of the most sacred
sites on Earth. The series "Music in High Places" is being described as a "National Geographic for the VH1 and
MTV Generations." Each episode is to bring yet-to-be announced
artists to an ancient location for a journey, including an unplugged
acoustic performance. Locations being targeted include Angkor Wat, Ayers Rock, Chichen Itza, Masada, Luxor, The Oracle
at Delphi, Giza, The Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, Stonehenge,
and the Taj Mahal. Initially, 13 one hour monthly specials are being produced to
air beginning in the fall on an unnamed cable network. Shooting

Some thoughts on Legends: Neil Young
I enjoyed Legends on Thursday night. As in the case with the CSNY's Legends, there is just so much to cover that an hour can not convey the
full spectrum of one's musical career. None-the-less this was
done well. Nice to see some new matters addressed and not all
the obvious things were shown. Neil revealed more of himself to
the camera than I expected.
Nice photo montages of Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. Great to
see some recent Stephen and Neil footage. They were shown sitting
on a bench outdoors, discussing Buffalo Springfield... show us
more! Maybe if/when the BS boxed gets released there will be some
sort of PR on Buffalo Springfield..... here's hoping. Other great
vintage live CSNY clips shown were "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Old Man," and "Ohio." On "Old Man", Stephen is shown playing on an upright acoustic bass.
I liked hearing Neil talk about "Journey Through the Past." He said at the time he needed a break from music and being "Neil
Young," so he put himself completely into the film project, (which
subsequently was about him and his music), but he felt free, working
in a different creative medium. It was also great to see a crisp
and clear version of the classic CSNY version of "Down by the
River" from the film "Celebration at Big Sur." I wish that film would get released one of these days for home
video. We do know that a DVD version of "Journey Through the Past,"
is to be included in the first installment of Neil's archives
boxed set.

Will there be a meeting of minds?? Would be nice....
Graham Nash appeared Friday 06/09 on CBSs
The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborne.
Thanks for the heads up Donna (CSNY2K@aol.com)!
The repartee was typical Kilborne, and Nash shined. Though I actually
feel Kilborne was treading lightly. From Kilbornes monologue
and intro I got the impression he is a Nash and CSNY fan.
He even got Graham to pickup the guitar and strum a few bars of
Just a Song, and Teach. Always a pleasure to see NashTV. Oh and
I almost forget, Graham gave Kilborne a pack of CSNY 2000 rolling
papers! He must like the guy! ;-)

VOLUNTEERS
Ramiro and I went to the late show last nite at the Bottom Line
for Jefferson Starship.
Another great set from the gang. Been seeing Kantner in various
configurations for a long time.
Jack Casady (who almost always joins Balin and Kantner for JS
gigs) was missed, but the
show was still uplifting. From "The Other Side", to "The Farm",
to "St Charles", to "Sketches of China",
the group spun a web of bright music.
After 4 shows in 2 nites Marty's voice was a little strained but
he forged through. Most noticeable
to me was that Diana was purely on and channeling the sounds,
feelings, and even intonations of
Grace Slick - most prevalent on "Greasy Heart", and "Hey Frederick".
These were 2 true acid
rockers and in the small setting was as powerful as a full fledged
Jefferson Airplane rendition;
even without Jack and Jorma's interplay.
CSNY content at the Jefferson Starship show: "Triad"and "Wooden
Ships."
(PS I think it's time that Alan Pepper and co. sink a few dollars
into the place!)
Suitelorraine.com has been awarded The Old Dude "Groovy Site Award".

Some News from this week's 06/05 issue of POLLSTAR:

On July 31st and August 1st, 2000 David Crosby and his band CPR

CSNY is STILL listed as the # 2 top North American tour.

Friday night June 2nd, IAN HUNTER was in rare form playing lots of the classics,
"Central Park & West," "Bastard," "All the Young Dudes," Cleveland Rocks,"
"Irene Wilde," "Just Another Night," "All the Way From Memphis," etc. as well as some
great new tunes.
Most moving was his tribute to his mate MICK RONSEN. A great performance!
Yesterday while visiting the bank, I was pleasantly surprise to
hear Mssr Nash and the boys singing
"Heartland." The supermarket is another strong hold for CSN tunes!
