Excerpt from December 12th, 2001
BILLBOARD Online by Todd Martens

"Perhaps the evening's strongest performance (which drew a standing
ovation from former Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der
Maur) was Rufus Wainwright and CHRIS STILLS' rendition of "Harvest," with the two
trading off vocals and adding depth with some cleverly timed falsettos."

Don Henley shares a hug with David Crosby during the Children's
Benefit Concert at Paul Tsongas Arena in Massachusetts December 5th.
The benefit raised $300,000 for the children of 9/11 victims from the
Merrimack Valley.

George Harrison's death from cancer on November 29th in Los Angeles
knocked war off the front pages for at least a day, as seen in a
collection of British national newspapers.

George in Pollstar 12/14/01
GEORGE HARRISON
The death of George Harrison, 58, in Los Angeles November 29th
sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and friends worldwide. It
also sent media descending on India in hopes of catching a glimpse of
the Hare Krishna devotee's purported last rites along the Ganges
River.

Harrison, who had been fighting cancer since 1998, reportedly died
at the home of longtime friend Gavin de Becker after last-ditch
attempts to treat a brain tumor at Staten Island University Hospital
in New York City and UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

With wife Olivia and two spiritual advisers at his bedside, Harrison
"left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of
death, and at peace ... " the family said in a statement announcing
his death.
"He often said, 'Everything else can wait but the search for God
cannot wait, and love one another.'"
There are two surviving members of the Fab Four, a fact not lost
on a generation of baby boomers confronted with its own mortality.
Harrison was barely 20 years old when The Beatles launched the
"British Invasion"with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

A measure of the impact of Harrison's death was plain to anyone
watching morning news shows December 1st, just hours after the family
announced his passing. For the first time since September 11th,
terrorism and the bombing in Afghanistan took a back seat to
retrospectives and tributes to the highly spiritual "Quiet Beatle."

Fans quickly gathered and shrines appeared at landmarks associated
with The Beatles such as Abbey Road Studios in London, the site of
the Cavern Club in Liverpool, the Strawberry Fields monument to John
Lennon in New York City and The Beatles' sidewalk star on Hollywood
Boulevard.

Family friends reported that a private ceremony was held for
Harrison shortly after his death, and within hours his body dressed
in traditional Hindu robes was cremated at a nearby mortuary in a
cardboard coffin in accordance with Krishna tradition.

The family thanked fans for their affectionate tributes and asked
that they join them in "a minute of meditation in honor of George's
journey, wherever you are Monday (December 4th) at 1:30 p.m. PST," a
minute that coincided with Harrison's reported time of death.

The announcement touched off a torrent of rumor and media
speculation that the family, with Harrison's ashes, was en route to
India to perform last rites by immersing his remains in two of the
country's holy rivers a traditional ritual among those of the Hindu
faith. But at press time, no one was sure if it would actually happen
or, for that matter, that it already had.

Harrison, known for his wry sense of humor, may well have had the
last laugh in death at the expense of the media he went to great
lengths to elude in life.

The Jennifer Stills Demo is here....
01. Bend
02. Stronger
03. Lay You Down
04. Cry of Angels

Jennifers' vocals are heartfelt throughout.
Of the 4 songs showcased here, 2 are ballads.
I still prefer the guitar rocker vehicle for her sound; which was more prevalent on her original cassette demo I received a few years back.

It seems to fit her best. This can be found on the last cut, "Cry of Angels." A straight-ahead rocker.
The best way for me to experience music is live. I would love to see Jennifer Stills live. I wish she could/would hit the east coast.

The small club scene is thriving here in nyc.

And the same goes for her brother Chris - come back out East sir! Please?

LA TIMES ARTICLE ON NEW NEIL YOUNG SONG
Passenger on Flight 93 Inspires Neil Young Song

By STEVE HOCHMAN
SPECIAL TO THE LA TIMES
December 5, 2001
A new Neil Young song paying tribute to the
passengers on the hijacked United Airlines flight
that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11 has been
arriving on desks of rock radio programmers around
the country this week with no advance notice or
promotional fanfare.

"Let's Roll" was inspired by the words of passenger
Todd Beamer, who called a GTE Airfone operator from
the plane and told of the passengers' plan to storm
the cockpit to overpower the terrorists. As he set
the phone down, the 32-year-old Oracle Corp.
accounts manager reportedly said, "Let's roll."

Moments later, Flight 93 plummeted into the western
Pennsylvania countryside, killing all 45 people
aboard but foiling the hijackers' presumed plan to
strike a target in Washington, D.C.

Young wrote and recorded "Let's Roll" two weeks ago
and it was rushed to radio by Reprise Records. "Neil
saw an article on Todd Beamer and what happened,"
Young's manager, Elliot Roberts, said Monday. "He
wrote the song on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving
and recorded it the very next day with Booker T. &
the MG's and Poncho [guitarist Frank Sampedro] of
Crazy Horse. I went up there [to Young's Northern
California ranch] that Sunday and came down with a
copy of it on Monday." On the record, Young sings
over an insistent, dramatic, funk-rock beat: I know I
said I love you/I know you know it's true/I've got
to put the phone down/And do what we've got to
do/One standing in the aisle way/Two more at the
door/We've got to get inside there/Before they kill
some more/Time is running out/Let's roll

The song premiered on radio the evening Roberts
returned to L.A., with an airing by deejay Jim Ladd
on KLOS-FM (95.5) before anyone from Reprise even
knew the track existed. Two days later, Roberts took
a copy to the company's Burbank headquarters to play
for label executives.

Phil Costello, senior vice president of promotion,
was among the first to hear it there and says it was
decided by Roberts and Warner Bros./Reprise Chairman
Tom Whalley to get it to radio as quickly as
possible.

"Neil just wanted to get it out. We took the CD and
started to burn copies here."

A team of secretaries was enlisted to help make the
more than 400 copies and print up address labels
into the night last Thursday.

The discs, with only the words "Neil Young Let's
Roll" written by hand on the surface to identify
them, were then packed into envelopes with no cover
letter or press release. On Friday, the packages
were put in the mail for Monday delivery.

Costello says the record has had positive receptions
at key classic-rock stations around the U.S. But
Jeff Pollack, a programming consultant for more than
100 stations, says the success of the song will not
be measured simply in airplay.

"The song will have a sizable impact on rock
stations," Pollack says. "But whether it becomes a
hit or not is irrelevant. That's not [Young's]
intention. It's simply a salute to heroism and, once
again, something from Neil that says, 'Here's how I
see it.' That's what makes it so authentic."

Roberts says the song will be on Young's next album,
due in February or March, but at this time there are
no plans for a commercial release of the single.

Young is also making a personal donation to a Beamer
family fund
.

*FOR GEORGE*

"George was a giant, a great, great soul with all of the humanity,
all of the wit and humor, all the wisdom, the spirituality, the
common-sense of a man and compassion for people.

"He was like the sun, the flowers and the moon, and we will miss him enormously.
The world is a profoundly emptier place without him.'' - Bob Dylan

Graham Nash spoke with Aaron Brown on CNN about George Harrison

CNN NEWSNIGHT AARON BROWN
George Harrison Dies at the Age of 58

Aired November 30, 2001 - 22:00   ET
This is a live TV program. Some of the phrases people used today to remember George Harrison: a lovely man, a gentlemen, a great guy, an incredible human being. That last one was from his friend Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash, who says the big regret for him is not knowing the other songs that were in George's mind that we'll never get to hear. Graham Nash joins us now from Encino, California. Wow. You've a tough act to follow now.

Good evening. Glad to have you with us. You said at the beginning that you thought you had parallel lives. And tell me how you -- tell me what you meant.

GRAHAM NASH, MUSICIAN: Well, we both came from very humble beginnings in the north of England. We both survived World War II. We both found that -- as did many rock 'n' rollers that came from England -- that music was our salvation.

All we really had to do, you know, was to kick a ball around the street and play with your friends. And then all of sudden Lonnie Donegan (ph) comes along, who -- who is a master of skiffle -- and it was cheap guitar and everybody could do it and we could all learn three chords.

And that's what I did and that's what George did. It's what John did and Paul and everybody else that you know that came out of what was called the British Invasion. Music saved our lives. It really did.

BROWN: Is that why -- I mean, you think of it that way? It gave you -- it was the way out of whatever life would have otherwise been?

NASH: The gold watch.

BROWN: Yeah, yeah.

NASH: Yeah. Because, you know, what you were supposed to do was do what your dad did and do what his dad did. And if it was good enough your your grandfather, my God it's good enough for you, son. But our parents did not allow us to do that. So music was our escape. When we went down to -- to London, my goodness, it was like visiting a completely foreign planet. Very few people had been out of Manchester at that point, of the kind of people that we were.

BROWN: Yes.

NASH: So music really saved our lives.

BROWN: I read today where he said once -- not that long ago -- that he didn't much think of himself as a Beatle, that Beatle was a suit he wore. Talk about celebrity a little and how you think that might have affected him, how he handled it differently than the others.

NASH: Well, like I said earlier, there were people that knew George much more intimately than I did. But in observing and -- and being with him on many, many occasions -- but mostly observing him, I was astounded at the grace and the dignity with which he handled what you just referred to as his Beatle suit.

It was chaotic. It was madness. Everybody wanted to know what every Beatle wore, what they said, what they smoked, what they ate, who they slept with. They wanted to know every single thing.

And George always was able to maintain this distance from it. His reality was not in how much money that he made or famous he was. His reality was that he was communicating with his music and that of his friends and his -- and his compadres.

And it was not that important to him to be a Beatle. I think his internal process of what was happening to him was -- was played out as we all get this deck of cards to play in our lives. And George's deck was in terms of whether he was more famous or richer than anybody else, it never came into -- as far as I can see -- it never came into his being.

BROWN: Did -- did all the other guys, the people who weren't Beatles but who were making music at the time, were they going "Boy, I'd like some of that. That looks like fun?" NASH: It -- it wasn't so much as that. When, you know, I've known them in my own way since -- let me see -- 1959 or 1960. And we were playing the talent show together in Manchester. It was kind of like the Ted Mack Amateur Hour where a promotor gets a bunch of local talent and when you win you go on to the next city. And they were doing a Buddy Holly song, strangely enough, called "Think It Over."

That was the very first time that I ever saw them. They weren't even the Beatles then. But it was very obvious that they had something together where people would say, my God, you know?

I mean, I used to work at a nightclub that they came and played once. And they walked through the door -- all four of them -- and I swear to God every girl wet her knickers. And they hadn't even played a note. There was something about them that was undeniable.

BROWN: Graham Nash, it's delightful to talk to you. You did well following Lou Harrison, by the way. That wasn't an easy thing to do. Thanks for joining us.

NASH: No, it's not. Very much my pleasure, Aaron. Thank you very much.

BROWN: Thank you. Graham Nash in Encino, California. We'll be right back. We'll take you to break with George Harrison and the Traveling Wilburys. Be right back.

CSNY hit the road in 2002
Stephen Stills, explains the impetus behind the 2002 tour this way:
"Neil called and said 'Come on, let's go. Let's go now.'
You see we originally thought we were gonna go out in August. When
Neil called I said, 'Yeah we're ready to go out and play. When do you
want to do that?' He said 'Now.' I said, 'Now?' He said, 'Yeah, the
time's right. The people need this. Let's go.'"
