Stephen Stills classic solo 1975 release
"Stills"
is currently available in a new format

DTS 5.1
What is DTS? - Digital Theatre Systems
"DTS - Digital Surround...transforms existing "home theater"
systems into six discrete channels of exceptionally clear, better-than-compact disc, digital audio performance.
In1993, Steven Spielberg's movie JURASSIC PARK introduced the crisp, clear sound of DTS.
Groundbreaking in its flexibility, reliability and total sonic realism,
DTS has rapidly become the digital sound format preferred worldwide.
DTS Digital Surround is the only 5.1 surround sound format
that can deliver this 3-dimensional experience through new music recordings on compact discs,
original 5.1 soundtracks on motion picture laserdiscs and a wide variety of products on DVD.
DTS encoded compact discs and motion picture laserdiscs are available and can be heard on any player
with a built-in digital output connector."
This record is one of my all-time favorites.
I look forward to getting this DTS version and hearing it in a different way.
After I give it a good listen I will report back here with my thoughts.
I am curious to know why this record was chosen to be released
in such a format. Perhaps Stephen had a hand in having this done?

This month at
AUDIOREVOLUTION.COM
They review "STILLS" DTS 5.1... and also spell Stephen's name wrong (PH please - not V).
Here is an excerpt from that review:
"On the technical front, this album dates from 1975, though some tracks go back to 1971.
Thus we are most likely dealing at least with 16-track masters and possibly some early 24s.
This appears to be another Van Velsen/Margouleff/Miller surround remix, but as always,
you cant tell this from the (non-existent) liner notes. The original tapes have cleaned up nicely,
although there is some overcompression on drums that may or may not be deliberate.
Some tracks that are very near the edge as far as distortion goes surround shows up virtually everything.
But any faults here are from the original masters, not from the entirely competent surround presentation.
As usual with this team, each track has a different surround layout in some respect,
keeping the presentation interesting and involving to the ear.
The overall surround treatment is sensitive and appropriate for the material."

South American fans have (2) Neil Young dates on the horizon
so far for 2001...
01/18/01 @ Campo de Polo - Buenos Aires; Argentina
01/20/01 @ Rock In Rio - Rio De Janeiro; Brazil
These have been confirmed as dates bringing back the horse...

Fear and Loathing in America:
The Brutal Odyssey of an Outlaw Journalist 1968-1976
Hunter S. Thompson - Gonzo Letters, Vol. 2
Amazon.com says of this new hardcover release:
Provocative and revealing,
Fear and Loathing in America cements Hunter S. Thompson's
reputation as one of the great literary and cultural icons of our time -
the only man alive to have ridden with both the Hell's Angels and Richard Nixon.

Santa dropped this one down the chimney for me....
Crisp, clean and delicious.. audio and video

Friends, please take note that the
NEIL YOUNG
Road Rock cd and the Red Rocks video/dvd uses the same
cover art, with just the name change.
I feel this is confusing for the consumer.
Why use the same art for 2 different projects?!?

It is also available in VHS format.

A little holiday cheer ....
THE NIGHT BEFORE ZEPMAS
By Lee McCauslin ©
'Twas the night before Zepmas, when all through the cottage
The Zeppelin was blaring (at voluminous wattage!);
The stockings were hung in our britches with care,
In hopes that the chicks will think there's something there;
The guitars were nestled all snug on their stands,
(Cuz too much practicing had caused some sore hands);
And mamma in her 'nightie, and I in my thong,
(The kids were at Grandma's. What could go wrong?),
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flasher,
(Ooops! Better close up the robe, you big masher).
The moon on the breast (heh-heh, "breast" made me snicker)
Gave the lustre of mid-day to my Zep bumper-sticker.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature zeppelin, and a guy with a beer.
He had some backpacks, with three circles on 'em,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Bonham.
More rapid than eagles his sLed dogs they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, BONZO! now, RAIN SONG! now, LEVEE and MOBY!
On, DIXON! on GALLOWS! on, HURDY and GURDY!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! (Careful! Don't fall!)"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with New Orleans, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the sled dogs they flew,
With the packs full of bootlegs, and St. Bonham too.
And then, in a sprinkling of sled dogs, I heard,
They not only sprinkled, they also left turds!
As I drew in my hand, and I reached for my gun,
Down the chimney St. Bonham came like a hun.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his shoes,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and booze;
A bundle of Third Eyes he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, (He'd been drinking sherry)!
On top of his head, he wore a droog bowler,
And his beard was quite sweaty from a long drum solo;
The stump of a drumstick he held tight in his fist,
(He'd been trying to hit cymbals. He must not have missed);
He had a broad's face tattooed on his belly,
That squinched, when he laughed, like she thought it was smelly.
His chubby was plump, (I couldn't help see),
And I laughed (It was HUGE when compared to me!);
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know he was hip to the Led;
He spoke not a word, (seems he doesn't like prose),
And filled all the stockings; (but not with *his* hose!),
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his zeppelin, to his team gave a holler,
And away they all flew (I wanted to foller!).
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY ZEPMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT."

Looking Good!!!
"As for the show, it was everything I expected. It was an intimate setting much like VH1 Storytellers.
Graham was seated on stage with another gentleman, David Spero -who I later found out is the director
of programming for the R&R Hall of Fame; (and Joe Walsh's manager - Lorraine).
David would ask Graham questions about his life and his career as a musician, photographer and collector.
In between the question and answer session, Graham would sing excerpts from songs, some requested
by the audience. Some of the ones he sang were "King Midas in Reverse" (requested from someone in the
audience), "Carrie Anne" (which he said was written for Marianne Faithful), "Simple Man" (which was written
during his break up with Joni Mitchell), "Ohio" and "Heartland" to name just a few. He even sang a couple of
new ones in their entirety, "Come With Me" which he wrote for his wife and "Try to Find Me" which was
inspired by some of the Bridge School kids.
(Graham recently recorded both of these songs for his next solo project. - Lorraine).
He moved back and forth from guitar to keyboard and also played harmonica. He sounded very very good.
His voice was right on. Graham was presented with a giant size membership card to the Hall of Fame,
a wallet size one and a R&R Hall of Fame jacket which he later wore at the reception. The show started
a little past 7:30 and ended around 9:15. What a great show it was!"

Poetry Corner:
"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'ver vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in spritely dance.
The waves besides them danced; but they
Out-did the sparking waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

Quote from Steven Fromholz site:
"I hooked up with Stephen Stills on his first solo tour in the summer of 1971 and traveled all over
the world with a bunch of rock and roll crazies...
Since that time I've continued to play music and write
songs."...

Steven Fromholz Today
Craig Hillis Talks About Fromholz
A Fromholz fan, friend and sideman.
During the winter of 1970-71, I was a regular visitor at the Fromholz-Lake homestead in the
Rockies high above Boulder. Gold Hill was a rustic community of artists, university types and
pine-huggers with no stores, no paved roads or other related commercial blemishes. It was a
bohemian heaven tailor made for an aspiring songwriter from Kopperl, and a picker's paradise
for an energized rock and roll sprout from UT. Our wooden guitars came alive in the high, dry
air and Steven's big baritone filled up every corner of Janey's front room. The isolated
mountain environment, the warmth of Steve and Janey's hospitality and the cozy song sessions
around the pot-bellied stove linger as magic moments in my musical upbringing. I learned a
great deal about songs and how they came to be and, thanks to Steven's patience, I developed
some guitar skills that, in a very small way, contributed to his inexhaustible store of original
works.

A Stephen Stills quote on Colorado
from the Crosby, Stills and Nash Bio
by Dave Zimmer ©
"Also in Colorado, I met some real down-home people
who had no particular illusions about who I was. To them, I
was just Stephen. I liked that. It helped me sort out a few
things and brought me back to an understanding
that there's more to life than just rock and roll.
I began to paint; I was a Rocky Mountain rescue
volunteer, as well as an auxilary fireman."

Until Florida's high court last week unanimously sent Secretary of State Harris packing,
the long recount amounted to a get-out-the-popcorn legal joust between contending mediocrities.
