From the Village Voice
June 6th 1974

The summer concert schedules are about to be released...
Here's a look back to 1974 for New Jersey's Roosevelt Stadium.
All tickets were $6.50, except the Dead which was listed as
a "righteous" $5.00!!!
Check out the Seals and Crofts bill
America, Maria Muldaur and

My o' my how I love this picture!!!
I had tickets to this show, and as the gods would have it
I came down with a nasty spring flu.
Often the case when "spring tour" came around.
I was bed-ridden for a week.
Had to give away my tickets.
I remember my friends were to tell me about the special guest....
Then of course I heard it on WNEW....

From Playing in the Band by David Gans and Peter Simon 1985©
Excerpt from Mickey Hart:
"When Stephen Stills played with us (Brendan Byrne Arena,
April 1983), he was really moved. He understood the power, and
after the gig he said to me - and this is a great compliment, from Stills -
'This is the greatest garage band in the world!' He loved the looseness, the
spirit.... He doesn't get to play with a band that cooks like this. In his band, they're
playing his parts. Here, he turns around and these fire-breathing animals
are back there doin' the do on his head."

TOWERING LABEL DEAL
Tower Records is starting its own label, taking on the Big Five from the back of a record store in
Larkspur, Calif. 33rd Street Records was launched by company CEO Michael Solomon and is
headed by former Bill Graham Presents and A&M Records exec Morty Wiggins.
With Bertelsmann's purchase of CDNow and with record companies buying into Napster and
other online distributors of music, the retailer's role as middleman is rapidly changing. Best Buy, for
instance, launched its own label in 1999.
The label is starting off modestly, signing approximately six musicians this year with a $1
million investment for three years total, but Wiggins told POLLSTAR that number may increase.
Unlike the major labels, records on 33rd Street are expected to turn a profit after a meager 20,000
units. He said that artist royalties are significant, but did not elaborate.
The label has been contacted by several established acts, Wiggins said, although its main focus is
on debuting unknowns. The label has one obvious advantage: Tower can play its own records
in-store and place the product in prominent display racks within its worldwide retail network.
33rd Street has another advantage over the majors in that it's a&R guys are already on the payroll.
"Any Tower employee can submit an act we have on consignment," he said. "They send us the
CD and their reason for recommending [the artist]." One of its first signings, Noelle Hampton, came
from the recommendation of a consignment manager. The roster also includes modern rock duo Settie and
pop-punk band Align.

Back to the grind... happy monday.
Have a cup o' joe and hunker down here with some friends.

I think CSNY could have put it in their 2K sets...
