I hadn't seen ccny sicne August 1969 at Woodstock and I just saw them again on April 8 in Denver. I took my daughter. I don't think she's ever been to a concert with so much camaraderie. I was proud of CCNY and the part they played in making me who I am. I feel tremendous sorrow of all that has been lost since those '60's days. We had HOPE then for a better future. That's all I could share with my daughter, who is 24. I can't listen to the music anymore without sobbing. That's all.

Has Mr. Stills ever said what his inspiration for Daylight Again was? I serve in a Christian rock band, and have always been a fan of SAS. I would like to incorporate Daylight Again into a Memorial Day music service, and would love to know what Mr. Stills' thoughts were when writing it.

Stephen, great show in Greensboro,NC on 4/16.You rocked the house, you were "The Man" of the show, starting with the jam on Wooden Ships, the the Blues of OMT, to the "Suite". You alone were worth the price of a ticket. I have been a huge Stills fan from my early days, to watch you play and sing like you did on Tuesday night was amazing...Keep playing, don't stop, it's not time, just listen to the crowd, they will tell you when, and all I hear is the very loud cheers are chants for more...For all of you who are Stills fans, welcome to "Stillsville"..I can only hope to meet you someday...Keep rockin' "The Blues"..Thanks for the music..

Stephen - just saw you in Oakland. It wasn't enough so I bought tickets for the Austin show. See you in Tacoma and Portland in a couple of weeks. Your guitar and voice are stronger than ever. The four hours I stood down in front of David in Austin were unforgettable. This is a show that shouldn't be missed. There is something truely magical happening between the four of you and I don't think you even understand the magnetiude of what you yet may accomplish through your music.

Stephen replies, "I AM SAT DOWN"..doing a solo spot.. and the crowd went wild..my mate sat down but I didnt for a few seconds, I was TRANSFIXED!! The man is a GENIUS.. Since about 1974 ( I was 12) I have been enjoying the music of Stephen Stills. I have seen him both with "the boys" (30 times) and solo (20? times) over the past 25+ years. He was my inspiration for picking up the guitar that summer in 75. I have not put it down yet. Stephen, My children thank you for your words and melody that I have shared with them over the years. I'll always remember the "man with the big white guitar, and all sad stories to tell" ... Hopefully, I will thank you in person one day

Hello Again Everyone! Hope all is well and you got to see CSNY in whatever part of the country you live in. Just picked up a copy of "UNCUT" an English music and entertainment magazine (Feb Issue). The cover story is all about CSNY and the reunion. Overall, a very well written piece on their entire stormy relationship past and present, with some great pics. However, in one passage they mention the American Dream sessions, and the subject of Stephen's own substance abuse (I'll be as gentle as I can here) and his "mental health " came up. What's up with that? I've been a follower of Stephen and his music since I was kid, and I never heard about this. Granted, Stills is a grown man and no angel, but this was a strange thing to read. I'm hoping the writer may have gotten the info out of context. Any thoughts or comments appreciated. Have a great St. Patrick's weekend everyone!

Good morning all! Just saw CNSY at the First Union Center here in Philadelphia and let me tell you it was one censored of a show! All four members were on the mark and the playing and singing was outstanding. There were a few odd choices of songs during the evening, but hey, how many times can you sing "Teach Your Children?". Not having seen CSN or Neil since the early 90s, I was surprised there was very little dialouge between the guys and the audience. Just a few "thank yous" and "how ya doin?" Even Graham Nash the designated spokesman for the group was unusually quiet, just sticking to the songs and waving out at the crowd once in awhile. One critique if I may - . Stephen needs to go back to playing his Gibson and Gretch guitars more. The Fender Srat he played for most of the show does not have that "Stills Guitar Sound" that we all know and love. Anybody have insight why he's using the Strat now? Anyway, I was glad to be a part of the evening, they have given us so many years of great music and memories and I hope they continue to do so for a long time to come. Take care everyone, and enjoy the shows if you're going. Art Connor

Stephen, Just wanted to wish you continued success and let you know I will be in the front row at Reunion Arena April 11 to see "da boys" rip it up! I am part of a CSN/CSNY tribute band here in the Dallas area called 4 Way Street (I'm not really Steven Stills, but I play you on TV!) I saw you last year here with CSN. I was in the front row and you gave your timbala (sp) drumstick to my beautiful date. Anyway, I have aped virually all your licks note-for-note and used the need to "re-create that Stills sound" as an excuse to buy Gretsch White Falcons, Reverse Firebirds, butterscotch Tele/Esquires, etc. But now your primarily using a ('62?) Strat. censored, now I gotta buy one of those (I hate when that happens). Anyhew, I've been a fan since my 10 year older brother came home from college with the "Buffalo Springfied Again" album. We play Bluebird, Mr Soul, and Rock & Roll Woman from the Herd and virtually all of the CSN/CSNY catalogue. IU would love to meet you in person if the opportunity comes. In the meantime, I'll be the dude in the front row of Reunion Arena singin' along with you in April. Take car and keep on keepin' on Matt Carroll telspeed@charter.net 4waystreet.vze.com

I have been a fan of yours since 1969, and I have learned most of what I know about playing a guitar from listening to you and your associates. The first concert I ever attended was in 1974, in Largo, Maryland at the Capitol Center to see CSN&Y. I was sitting in the THIRD ROW (talk about being spoiled forever), and was enthralled the whole time ... in fact, I learned a few crusial chords for Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by watching your left hand very carefully. Happy belated birthday, and I hope to censored that you have many more. With Sincerest regards, Tom Zeiler

Comments: Stephen Stills is an incredible man who has lead an incredible life. I only wish someone would write a biography about him or that he would write one about himself. I can't imagine what goes on in that head of his but the glimpse he gives us through his music of what he feels is beautiful. Thanks Stephen.

I have always wished there would be a way to tell Stephen what I thought about his music over the years, one unique song after another, how it touches me deeply, and every carefully plucked guitar string rings in my heart... and now I'm speachless. Stephen you are the Cezanne of the rock guitar. I loved Amazonia, heard it live at Tanglewood in early 90's. then the "Stills Alone" got left in my car when I traded it in. Saw CSN at SPAC this summer. Great Concert. love Kinney

Comments:Stephen Stills is a legend. A true musician and icon in the US culture. All this talk about Eric Clapton and others being the best, I disagree and put Stills at the top of the bunch. Keep on rocking Steve and thanks for all of the great albums you've done and for all of the great albums that you are left to do. Also, thank you for keeping CSN and CSNY alive. Despite unfair reviews by many 90's publications about CSN and CSNY's 1990's albums, I think those albums are great. Also, thank you for your "Stills Alone" album. It's a classic!

Hey Steve!! I'm currently working my ass off on a compilation of Tennessee artists for the Freedom Engine fund to buy FDNY a new fire truck. I've recently signed a development deal with Van Morrison's production company. 4*20 is the greatest song ever. You HAVE to do it on CSNY's next tour. That song got me through the Summer of 97. Comments: My roomate and I sold that flying V to Stephen many years ago. It was probably around 1973 or 1974. Jim Laird had bought it at Gruhns for about $800.00, along with 2 Les pauls and a strat. I was playing in local bands in Iowa and "the Vee" was just one of guitars that we had around. Jim decided to sell it and placed an ad in the Chicago Sun and one day a roadie for Stills called and invited us to bring it to a show in Omaha. It was one of the first Vee made by Gibson in the first two year run. Stills bought the guitar for the incredible price of $1200.00. I saw that those guitar go for $75,000 to $100,000 now. Oh Well it makes for a great story on the guitar I never should have sold. I am glad that Stephen Stills plays it and seems to love it.

Comments:This is for Scott who is asking about Open Up.
Open Up is basically the same lyrics, with a different tile and chorus, appearing on the REO 1973 release credited as just by Stephen Stills.
The song can be found on Stephen Stills 2
This record was released in 1971.
Know You Got to Run
by Stephen Stills/John Hopkins.
Know you got to run
Know you got to hide
Don't know who to follow
Who is on your side
Don't know where you're going
You won't talk of where you've been
And I may see you tomorrow
Never more again
Seen you in the city
Seen you on the road
Your face is all a twisted
'Cause your brain's a heavy load
Then you turn and ask me
How did I ever know
Talk about your searchin'
Well I think it's all for show
Heard your mournful song
Heard your baleful cry
Seen the light of hunger
Lingering deep within your eyes
Talk about your sinkin'
What a hole you're in
You expect for me to love you
When you hate yourself my friend
And you got yourself a potion
For to keep you from your sleep
In the dark and lonely hour
I heard you laugh and weep
You'll always be runnin'
Until you find your doom
Never face your lonely soul
Never face the gloom
Know you got to run
Know you got to hide
Don't know who to follow
Who is on your side
Don't know where you're going
You won't talk of where you've been
And I may see you tomorrow
Never more again
*****************************
Here's Open Up
Open Up
by Stephen Stills ©1973
Say you know you've got to run
You know you've got to hide
You don't know who to follow
Or who is on your side
You don't know where you're goin'
You won't talk of where you've been
And I may see you tomorrow
Or nevermore again.
And I've seen you in the cities
I've seen you on the road
And your face is all a-twisted
'cause your brain is a heavy load
And then you turn and ask me
Say how will I ever know
And you talk of all your searchin'
But I think it's all for show
Open up my friend
Love someone if you can
Go on, let her in
Open up again.
And I hear your mournful songs
I hear your painful crys
And I've seen the light of hunger
Linger deep within your eyes
And you talk about your sinkin'
And what a hole you're in
You expect for me to love you
When you hate yourself my friend.
And you've got yourself a potion
Oh to keep you from your sleep
In that dark and lonely hour
Well I've heard you laugh and weep
But you'll always be a-runnin'
Runnin' till you find your doom
'Cause you never face your lonely soul
You never face the gloom.
Open up my friend
Love someone if you can
Go on, let her in
Open up again.

Comments: I have seen Stephen play live since the abreviated Still Young band tour stop at Pine Knob in Clarkston , Michigan. It is always facinating to watch the live guitar playing. I wore out Stills "Live" on vinyl years ago and recently repurchased the Joe Gastwirt remasterd CD; the accoustic playing is awesome.
I started listening to Michael Hedges 12 years ago before I knew there was a relationship between Stephen and Michael.
It was very classy to use Michaels recorded guitar track on Jay Leno when CSN sung "My Country Tis of Thee" as I remember. The dialog with John McCain was very nice. I wish I could get a DVD of that show.
